2005 Sterling L. (Bud) Burks Award for Outstanding Staff Environmental Research
Mike Smolen has a B.S. in Biology from the University of Rochester, M.S. in Botany from the University of Tennessee, and Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from Virginia Tech. His 30-year career includes field studies and modeling of agricultural nonpoint sources, study of federal and state-sponsored agricultural nonpoint source programs around the country, and education of engineers and developers on storm water and sediment control. Dr. Smolen has been the Coordinator for Water Quality Programs for the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at OSU since 1990. He is a professor in the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department and a member of the Steering Council for the Environmental Science Program. Dr. Smolen also is a member of the Oklahoma Water Quality Monitoring Council and the state Nonpoint Source Working Group.
