2008 Public Service Company of Oklahoma Research Assistantship in Environmental Management

Kathryn Elkins is an OSU-Tulsa Environmental Science graduate student and teaches 8th grade earth science at Sapulpa Jr. High.  In addition to be a candidate for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Early Adolescence and Science, she coordinates the Sapulpa Public Schools District Recycling program.

Kathryn's program, Show Inc., emphasizes recycling in both schools and the host community.  The three goals of this program are to increase awareness of the rationale for recycling; provide opportunities for recycling in elementary through high schools; and ensure that recycling is institutionalized in all schools.  In addition, it is noteworthy that Kathryn dedicates all proceeds from the district's recycling operations to provide jobs and training for disabled adults.
